Cannot install windows media player 11 on xp

Seems like a bad opinion for someone in the world of old OSes. From a fundamental definition, Old OSes as a whole, and their respective hardware and a significant portion of the software, are indisputably obsolete, as newer things have come along to do the same things the old ones did for almost all scenarios.

But nobody here cares, And that's a good thing. Granted, I do think WMP11 is a truly terrible piece of software, but that has nothing to do with obselence. To be fair, i think we should be respecting his request of a solution to the issue he faces with WMP11, rather than telling him to use something else even i am guilty of it.

If people here cared about obselescence we'd all be on the 'latest and greatest' OSes on brand new hardware, running the latest versions of any and all software. Our computers are connected with both wired and wireless network with statip IP address actually 2 addresses in each computer and he doesn't even have any Antivirus installed or running. Say's he doesn't open up things to get a virus. We'll see!

One thing one might try is to slipstream all the updates and hotfixes after SP3 came out along with Media Player 11 and IE 8. You have to go in and replace some of the installation files, and update others for that to work.

It's been done. Just thought I'd let you all know. Actually, after I slipstreamed IE8 I still could not get updates to install, nor would Media Player 11 install insisting on a need to restart I recently had the same issue as outlined in this thread.

During my troubleshooting i found many forums and pages pointing to the registry keys noted above but none to the registry key that eventually remedied my issue. I changed those values to 0 and then was able to install Windows Media Player 11, completely and any updates or hotfixes from Microsoft. It keeps failing and says that I need to restart my computer. This also happened with Internet Explorer 8. The message I get was "Windows Internet Explorer cannot install because another program or update is waiting to restart your computer.

Restart your computer and run this setup again. Other programs can install without issue, just the ones from Microsoft. I have searched the registry for file rename keys and also seached for anything that might be asking for the system to restart. I find nothing. Tried a lot of ideas from seaching on how to update, including I have deleted the Update cache and registered all the necessary update dll s including the wups2.
