The file is locked.try the command again later

You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. File is locked. Try the command later. Joined Nov 2, Messages 9. Need some help please. I have an unlocked excel workbook that is shared amongst 5 or 6 different people. This morning, tried to open it and got message "Operation cannot be completed Clicked ok and was then in the workbook.

Made a small change, went to save and it comes up with " This file is locked. Try the command again later " and are unable to save unless it is saved as another file.

There are no macros in the workbook saved as a xlsx file but there are 2 sheets for information where certain cells have been locked but without a password. The workbook is available at any time during the week. Obviously my colleagues and I need to save and the internet says a lot but does not make it clear.

Please assist. I've read on the Microsoft Help site that the issue is that somebody is accessing the file while another is trying to open it. Is there a way, perhaps through VBA, that I can not allow a user to save while somebody else is opening the document? Other suggestions on how to avoid this error? First, sorry it took so long to get back - busy! The formula looks good - the only problem is where I need to insert the filename:.

The filename changes daily. How would I insert a variable there that would reflect the current filename? Now - the status bar continually says "Waiting for file to close" and I get the "The file is locked. Please try again later" message each time I try to save the file, despite the file not being shared.
